Last month it was announced the board of directors is developing a new strategic plan to help guide the profession through the changes in the U.S. health care system that have had and will have a significant impact on the field of sleep medicine and the sleep technology profession. The board of directors encouraged members to review the 2012 Strategic Plan and submit comments. Membership feedback is an important part of this process, and the Board thanks everyone who took the time to review the plan and submit their comments. The board of directors will discuss these comments as the plan is finalized later this spring.

New AAST Journal Club

The "AAST Journal Club" is another new online learning opportunity that will help you stay up to date on the latest developments in the sleep field and earn continuing education credits. Each month you will be able to review an abstract of a recent research article published in the sleep field and submit questions for the author. A moderator will use these questions to conduct an interview with the author that will be recorded and made available with the full text of the study in the AAST Online Learning Center.

AAST Congratulates BRPT Scholarship Recipient

The AAST congratulates Mr. Surafel Taddese, of Olathe, Kansas, who is the winner of the second Andrea Patterson Memorial Scholarship from the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BPRT). Taddese is a student enrolled in the Polysomnography Sleep Study Program at Johnson County Community College (JCCC) in Overland Park, Kansas.

The deadline is approaching for Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (RPSGTs) to apply for equivalency status to obtain certification from the American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM) as a Registered Sleep Technologist (RST). Call for AAST Award Nominations for 2012

Each year the American Association of Sleep Technologists (AAST) recognizes individual members for their professional excellence, service and commitment to the association and to the sleep technology profession. AAST award recipients will be recognized in an awards ceremony conducted at the Annual Meeting, receive a plaque, complimentary general meeting registration to the 34th AAST Annual Meeting, reimbursement for travel to and from the Annual Meeting, hotel accommodations and meals (not to exceed three days).

AAST members are encouraged to recognize other member’s contributions and achievements by submitting a Award Nomination Form and a brief narrative endorsing their nomination to AASTawards@aastweb.org by January 31, 2012.

The Board concluded that members overwhelmingly want to continue receiving A2Zzz as a free benefit of membership. Senators Reach Agreement on SGR Proposal

Monday evening, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.), Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), and Finance Committee Ranking Member Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) reached a tentative consensus to stave off the proposed cuts to payments physicians receive for services provided to Medicare beneficiaries. The consensus proposal delays the payment cuts, which were produced in part by the sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula, for 12 months.

Recently the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released the 2011 Physician Fee Schedule Final Rule, a 2,000-page document that sets the payment rates for medical services that physicians provide to patients who are Medicare beneficiaries. The Final Rule does not directly involve sleep technologists; however, if Congress does not take immediate action, its indirect impact on our profession – and our jobs – will be enormous.

NC HB 819 Signed

NC HB 819 - the Polysomnography Practice Act, was signed by the Governor of North Carolina on August 7, 2009. This bill establishes a scope of practice for sleep technologists, establishes that sleep technologists work under general supervision of the physician, and requires that all sleep technologists obtain their RPSGT credential and register with the North Carolina Medical Board by January 1, 2012.
