Advances in Sleep Technology: Sleep and Breathing

REGISTER ONLINE
COURSE BROCHURE

February 21-22, 2009
Hyatt Regency Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio

TARGET AUDIENCE
Sleep technicians and technologists interested in exploring sleep related breathing disorders and their treatment with positive airway pressure devices. The course will include basic aspects of pathophysiology and recognition of sleep apnea and is therefore suitable for technicians new to the field. The course will also include a review of the state-of-the-art including new diagnoses and innovative treatments and is therefore suited for advanced technologists seeking to update their knowledge and skills.

COURSE OVERVIEW
This course is intended to provide sleep technologists with a comprehensive understanding of sleep related breathing disorders and their treatment. The course will begin with a discussion of respiratory physiology and changes that occur during sleep. A session will be devoted to the new rules for scoring respiratory events in sleep. A unique historical perspective on the development and modification of continuous positive airway pressure will be provided by one of the original researchers in the field. The range of sleep related breathing disorder diagnoses will be discussed, including the controversial “complex sleep apnea” diagnosis. The primary focus of the course will be on the treatment of sleep apnea, including the use of conventional and novel positive airway pressure devices. Adult and pediatric titrations will be reviewed. A strategy for home diagnosis and treatment will be discussed. The final session will focus on newly-released epidemiological data on the consequences of sleep apnea and the efficacy of treatment.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Review the pathophysiology of sleep related breathing disorders
  • Differentiate the types of sleep related breathing disorders
  • Examine the mechanism by which continuous positive airway pressure treats sleep apnea
  • Compare types of continuous positive airway pressure treatments for sleep apnea
  • Use epidemiological data to judge the importance of treating sleep apnea
