Registration and housing for the AAST 34th Annual Meeting is now open

General registration includes AAST general sessions held from Monday, June 11 to Wednesday, June 13, Industry Supported Events, SLEEP 2012 general sessions and the SLEEP 2012 Exhibit Hall. The APSS has reserved blocks of hotel rooms in four contracted properties located near the convention center in downtown Boston.

Call for AAST Award Nominations for 2012

Each year the American Association of Sleep Technologists (AAST) recognizes individual members for their professional excellence, service and commitment to the association and to the sleep technology profession. AAST award recipients will be recognized in an awards ceremony conducted at the Annual Meeting, receive a plaque, complimentary general meeting registration to the 34th AAST Annual Meeting, reimbursement for travel to and from the Annual Meeting, hotel accommodations and meals (not to exceed three days).

AAST members are encouraged to recognize other member’s contributions and achievements by submitting a Award Nomination Form and a brief narrative endorsing their nomination to AASTawards@aastweb.org by January 31, 2012.

A2Zzz Goes Online Only in 2012

The current issue of A2Zzz, volume 20, number 4, will be the final printed issue of the magazine, which is the official publication of the AAST. Beginning in 2012 with volume 21, A2Zzz will be available only on the AAST website as a dynamic, interactive online magazine.

The AAST course “Advances in Sleep Technology: New Directions in Sleep Apnea Evaluation and Therapy” will be held March 24-25, 2012, at the national office in Darien, Ill., a suburb of Chicago. An expert faculty will discuss emerging technologies used to evaluate and treat sleep-related breathing disorders, including cardiopulmonary coupling, pulse transit times, pulse arterial tonometry measures, nasal expiratory resistance devices and hypoglossal nerve stimulation.

Senators Reach Agreement on SGR Proposal

Monday evening, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.), Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), and Finance Committee Ranking Member Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) reached a tentative consensus to stave off the proposed cuts to payments physicians receive for services provided to Medicare beneficiaries. The consensus proposal delays the payment cuts, which were produced in part by the sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula, for 12 months.

Recently the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released the 2011 Physician Fee Schedule Final Rule, a 2,000-page document that sets the payment rates for medical services that physicians provide to patients who are Medicare beneficiaries. The Final Rule does not directly involve sleep technologists; however, if Congress does not take immediate action, its indirect impact on our profession – and our jobs – will be enormous.

Senate Approves Bill to Postpone Payment Cuts to January

Late Thursday the Senate voted to postpone a massive cut in payments to physicians for services provided to Medicare beneficiaries, agreeing to maintain the conversion factor at its current level through Dec. 31.

NC HB 819 Signed

NC HB 819 - the Polysomnography Practice Act, was signed by the Governor of North Carolina on August 7, 2009. This bill establishes a scope of practice for sleep technologists, establishes that sleep technologists work under general supervision of the physician, and requires that all sleep technologists obtain their RPSGT credential and register with the North Carolina Medical Board by January 1, 2012.
