Case of the Month #2: Supine Position & Stage R Sleep
Description
The AAST continues the “Case of the Month” educational program with a diagnostic study. The patient has sleep related breathing events that are more prominent in the supine position and are associated with severe oxygen desaturation when the patient enters stage R sleep.
The relative contributions of position and sleep stage are discussed. A differential diagnosis is presented, and treatment options are considered.
The case illustrates the importance of considering medical comorbidities in the evaluation of patients with sleep apnea.
