Sleep Technologist Recertification: It's Time!
Sleep technologists, did you know that recertifying your credential has gotten much easier?
In September, the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) began using an improved certification management system that offers several new online features for credential holders. In addition to streamlining BRPT’s technological infrastructure, the new database will make it easier for credential holders to maintain their profiles, certifications and track their application status.
The new online recertification tool makes the process easier
The online recertification tool is a comprehensive resource to manage all aspects of the recertification process. The continuing education credit tracking function of the tool allows the certification holder to record the date(s) of the education activity, a brief description of the activity, and the number of continuing education credits earned. Other tools which can be utilized within the online recertification tool include: the ability to view credential details, update information, and the option to download and print a new certificate.
An RPSGT credential holder must apply for recertification on or before their expiration date to avoid any late fees and penalties. Recertification expiration date is five years from the date the certificate was issued, and requires the credential holder to complete 50 continuing education credits (CECs) within the 5 year period.
For example, if an RPSGT received their credential on January 15, 2011, they must complete the recertification process on or before January 15. 2016. Notices for recertification are sent electronically every January and July of each year. Notices are sent to the current email address the BRPT has on file. We encourage all candidates to maintain current contact information on their RPSGT profile in order to assure they receive these important notices.
The importance of recertification
Recertification is the cornerstone of best practices in the credential process, and the BRPT is responsible to ensure that all RPSGTs continue their education. The BRPT follows the best practices for credentialing programs to ensure the RPSGT credential continues to be recognized in the medical community, allied health professions, and legislative bodies as the leading credential in polysomnographic technology.
Continuing education ensures that all RPSGTs continue to be up to date with changes that occur within the field of sleep technology. In addition, the recertification process reinforces the value of the RPSGT credential and the importance of patient centered care.
