The Value of Membership: A Sleep Professional’s Perspective

Debbie Akers is a registered sleep technologist who has been working in sleep since 1984. She has served as a board director for the AAST, along with being on various committees.

Currently, Akers is the past-president of the Virginia Academy of Sleep Medicine and sits on the Governor's Committee for Sleep Medicine for the state of Virginia. She can be described as a teacher, author, mentor, speaker, patient oriented care giver, and of course a proud sleep technologist and member of AAST.

We caught up with Akers to get her thoughts on what being a member of AAST has meant to her, both personally and professionally, and the advice she would give to other sleep professionals.

What factors prompted you to join AAST?

Akers: When I started to work with Dr. Catesby Ware in 1988, he said that a professional should always be part of their society in order to stay in touch with changes and to be part of the changes. I was already a member and regional representative of the Virginia Society for Respiratory Care, so I understood the value of being part of a professional society; we were going through licensing for RRT's at the time.

What do you value most about being a member of AAST?

Akers: I value the information I receive through emails, meetings, website, and the A2Zzzz publication. And of course, I value the people who I have come to call my friends.

What piece of advice would you give to new members to help them get the most out of their AAST membership?

Akers: Become a part of your society so your voice can be heard, do what's right for your patients, community, and your profession. The AAST is more than a society for rules, regulations, and information; it is also a fellowship of people with common goals.
