AAST Comment Regarding Sleep Technologists Exams

01/28/2011
Recently, information has been circulated in the sleep technology community about a new Sleep Technologist Certification Examination that will be offered by the American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM). According to an announcement from the ABSM, the examination is still in development and no additional details are available at this time. As such, the leadership of the American Association of Sleep Technologists (AAST) believes it is prudent to withhold a formal comment on the ABSM Sleep Technologist Certification Examination until there is a better understanding of the ABSM examination and specific details are made available.

The AAST supports all pathways to certification for sleep technologists, including the Registered Polysomnographic Technologists Examination offered by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists and the Sleep Disorders Specialty Examination (CRT-SDS and RRT-SDS) offered by the National Board for Respiratory Care. The leadership of the AAST encourages it member to pursue the pathway that best meet the needs of the individual.
