AAST Member Update - December 20, 2011

Posted by admin on Dec 20, 2011 12:27:00 PM

It’s hard to believe that the holiday season is already upon us and 2011 is coming to a close.  Typically this is the time of year when many of us take time to reflect on what we have done over the past year and set goals for the New Year.  As I look back at my first six months as your president and look forward to the coming year, I want to share with you my thoughts on the AAST and the sleep technology profession.

This past August the AAST Board of Directors began the journey of going through a strategic planning process to identify internal and external factors that could impact the sleep technology profession in the years ahead.  We’re finalizing the goals and objectives that will assist the Board in leading the organization to meet its mission to promote and advance the sleep technology profession.  In the coming weeks a draft of the strategic plan will be posted on the AAST website for your review and comment. The Board of Directors and I look forward to hearing from you.

This year the AAST Board of Directors, Committees and Task Forces will work diligently to expand the AAST’s presence in education, partner with state sleep societies on legislative and regulatory issues and address the impact that health-care reform will have on the sleep technology profession.   In 2012 the AAST’s textbook “Fundamentals of Sleep Technology, Second Edition,” will be published in the spring, and in the fall the AAST will hold a new course and host the 2nd annual State Sleep Society Leadership Conference.

Several weeks ago I noted that it is important to me and the Board of Directors to promote open and frequent communication.  In the coming weeks the AAST will be moving into the realm of social media by developing a presence on Facebook and LinkedIn.  We will also be expanding communications in the Member Update email, in A2Zzz and on the AAST website.  Starting in 2012 I am planning to write a regularly scheduled blog update, and members of the Board of Directors and I are planning to speak at several state sleep society meetings throughout the year.

For the past couple of weeks the AAST has been promoting the AAST’s Calls for Nominations (Candidates for the Board of Directors, Awards and Committee Volunteers).   I hope you take the time to review the Calls and respond. The success of the organization depends on its members’ involvement.

This is a great time to be in the sleep technology profession.  For the first time in our 33-year history, we have exceeded 5,300 members.  Together, let us work toward the advancement of sleep technology.  Please show your support once again and renew your membership for 2012.

I wish you Peace and Joy during this Holiday Season and a Happy New Year.
