From the President - A2Zzz Volume 21, Number 4

Posted by admin on Dec 27, 2012 12:13:00 PM

Former President John F. Kennedy once said that “Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other,” and I couldn’t agree more.

That’s why the American Association of Sleep Technologists (AAST) held its first ever Leadership Development Conference at the national office in Darien, Ill. in November. Topics included Professionalism and Ethics, Strategic Planning, Project Management, Robert’s Rules of Order and Social Networking. I would personally like to thank all of those who participated in the Leadership Development Conference. Each and every one of you has helped to contribute to my professional growth and development and I have benefited greatly from your example, your wisdom and your words of encouragement.

You can make a difference and committee involvement is a great way to help contribute to the development of both the AAST and the profession as a whole. A Call for Volunteers will be issued soon. Learn more about the AAST committee mandates on the AAST website.

The field of sleep medicine and the profession of sleep technology continue to change at a remarkable pace. Advances in technology, insurance and billing changes and recent revisions to the scoring rules may have you feeling a bit overwhelmed.

The AAST is dedicated to helping you stay on the cutting edge of sleep technology. By renewing your AAST membership for 2013, you will be able to take advantage of new educational opportunities as we work together to promote and advance the sleep technology profession.

Beginning in January, all AAST members will get free access to two new online learning modules every month – a value of $600! Each installment in the Case of the Month and the Journal Club series will provide you with the most relevant and current information for sleep technologists. As you learn, you will have an opportunity to earn up to 24 CECs from the convenience of your home or office – at no additional cost!

Members also receive exclusive discounts when you register for some of the premier educational events in the profession, including the AAST spring course in March 2013 and the AAST 35th Anniversary Meeting, which will be held June 2-4, 2013, in Baltimore, Md. And you will continue to receive members-only access to A2Zzz, which you can read to earn an additional 8 CECs each year.

As always, your membership also supports health policy and government relations initiatives to preserve the autonomy of the sleep technology profession. In these changing times, it is more important than ever for sleep technologists of all experience levels to unite together as we blaze new trails for our profession.

Your AAST membership is an investment in yourself, your career and your profession. Go to www.aastweb.org and renew your AAST membership today and I look forward to seeing you all at the AAST Spring Course March 23-24, 2013, at the national office in Darien, IL. Thank you.

Until we meet again,

Melinda Trimble
AAST President
